Recent Work: Information Assurance of IT Networks using Quantitative Metrics

IT networks are increasingly being used for transfer of mission critical data and information. IT managers are spending significant resources to improve Information Assurance (IA) i.e., security, availability and QoS of their network. One major challenge is the lack of a single metric to depict the IA health of IT networks. Solana Networks and Sombra Labs addressed some of the challenges in this area through a project with Canadian Federal Government department OCIPEP. As part of this work a detailed taxonomy for IA metrics was proposed. A set of operational measures associated with a sample set of metrics based on the taxonomy was developed. Finally, a framework was proposed which utilizes the taxonomy and metrics to arrive at a single rating to indicate the health of an IT network.
