Recent Work: Internet Public Alerting System (IPAS)
Solana Networks and Sombra Labs delivered an Internet Public Alerting (IPAS) for Industry Canada. IPAS provides emergency officials an adjunct to their existing disaster notification methods such as sirens, television and radio. With a significant portion of the public spending more of their time at their computers either during working hours, or during their leisure time, the Internet holds much promise as an additional, complementary medium to alert the public in the event of emergencies.
The IPAS system was developed and field-triAled over a 15-month period. The work for Industry Canada involved background research into the area of Internet based disaster alerting and the development of a scalable, secure approach to disaster notification via the Internet. A system was developed that achieved these goals and underwent three successful rounds of field trials with 8 municipalities across Canada. This distributed client server system was developed from the ground-up utilizing an iterative software development methodology.
